On May 22, 1960, at 19:11 GMT, the largest earthquake in recorded history struck Chile, measuring 9.5 on the moment magnitude scale, releasing energy equivalent to 23,000 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs, and affecting an area of approximately 560,000 square kilometers.

The earthquake's epicenter was near the city of Valdivia, which was 435 kilometers south of Santiago, the capital city of Chile. Before the earthquake, Valdivia was a thriving city with a population of around 69,000 people, and the region was known for its rich agricultural land and dense forests. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 35 kilometers, which is relatively shallow, and this proximity to the surface contributed to its devastating impact.

As the earthquake was happening, the ground was shaking for approximately 10 minutes, with some areas experiencing tremors for up to 30 minutes. The quake triggered landslides, tsunamis, and fires, causing widespread destruction and chaos. The city of Valdivia was almost completely destroyed, with around 90% of its buildings damaged or destroyed, leaving 40,000 people homeless. The nearby town of Corral was also severely affected, with 80% of its homes destroyed.

The earthquake also left around 2 million people without access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter. The Chilean government, led by President Jorge Alessandri, responded quickly to the disaster, deploying 5,000 troops to the affected areas to assist with rescue and relief efforts.

The earthquake was so powerful that it actually shortened the length of a day by about 1 second, and it also affected the Earth's rotation, causing the planet's axis to shift by about 8 centimeters. The quake also triggered tsunamis that traveled across the Pacific Ocean, affecting several countries including Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, and Australia, causing an estimated $1 million in damages in Hawaii alone, which is equivalent to around $8 million today.
